Image compression guide

Compression reduces file size to speed up websites, send images via email, or save storage. With JPG and WEBP you can control quality: lower quality means smaller files, with some detail loss.

Quality: how to choose a good value

70–85 is often a great balance for photos (web and social media). 85–95 is better for text screenshots or fine details. Below 70 is only recommended if you must cut size dramatically and accept visible artifacts.

Practical tip

For screenshots with text, try PNG or high quality settings. JPG compression can blur letter edges and make text harder to read.

FormatBest forNotes
JPGMaximum compatibilitySupported everywhere, often larger than WEBP
WEBPModern webOften smaller at similar quality, growing support

Privacy

Compression runs locally in your browser using the Canvas API. No files are uploaded to any server. Your original files remain unchanged on your device.

FAQ

Is it lossy compression?
Yes for JPG and WEBP: lower quality reduces size and detail. For lossless results, use PNG format instead.
Can I compress PNG?
PNG is lossless and cannot be quality-compressed in the same way. Convert to WEBP or JPG to reduce size significantly.
Are files uploaded?
No, all processing happens locally in your browser. No files leave your device.
What quality setting should I use?
For photos: 75-85%. For screenshots with text: 85-95%. Below 70% only if small size is critical.
